Sampling with Skittles!

15 September 2022

A creative and fun lesson that only required a handout, a calculator and a bag of Skittles!

In today’s Psychology class, as part of the Research Methods topic, students were tasked with a sampling exercise using skittles. The skittles were the target population and pupils had to obtain participants by using different sampling methods.

The purpose of this activity is to consolidate knowledge in relation to the five sampling methods: random, opportunity, volunteer, systematic and stratified.

Furthermore, this activity also provided an opportunity for students to calculate percentages, which is one the mathematical requirements of A Level Psychology.

At the end of the exercise, they had to evaluate the sampling methods, deciding which method produced the most representative sample. The reward for completion of the exercise – they were able to eat their population!
