Year 3 have been thinking about water conservation this term, in English lessons on the short film ‘Zahra’, as well as their recent memories of the hot summer we have just experienced! During their recent visit to Bough Beech Water Treatment Works in Edenbridge, they discovered how river water becomes the lovely, clear water that runs from our taps.
The girls had a tour of the site, which included some interactive games to illustrate water conservation. They also walked up the dam wall to see the reservoir before crossing the bridge over the overflow to the valve tower. A particularly fascinating part of the day was the journey underground and underwater, through the tunnel carrying the main water pipe from the reservoir to the treatment works. Do have a look at our photos! Putting your ear to that big black water pipe, do you think you would be able to hear all that water sloshing around as gravity helps it on its way? Ask a Year 3 pupil to tell you the answer!
We had a great day – and some wonderful weather too! Thank you so much to our three parent volunteers – we really appreciate your time and support.

Year 6s TFL Talk
On Thursday, Year 6 had a representative from TFL (Transport for London) and the London Transport Museum, visit us to talk about travelling safety on public transport. He told us how to stay safe on trains, buses, trams and more. Here are some vital things you need to know:
never stand to close to a road or track
order your zip card 5 weeks before you turn 11 so you definitely have one
always tap your zip card
if you need help, there are ‘Help Points’ or you walk into a business and ask someone in a uniform as these people are ‘safer strangers’
always try to sit in an aisle rather than the window seat on the bus
always stand on the right of an escalator to make way for people walking on the left
show respect for all TFL staff
We chanted together to help us to remember the safe distance that we need to stand away from the road or train tracks: “Your height plus an extra step!”
We discussed how important it is for Year 6 to know how to be safe when travelling on public transport because this is the age where we gain more independence and might be travelling to our secondary schools by ourselves next year. This was such a good talk because we now feel much more informed about how to be safe, plan our journeys and make smart decisions when travelling without an adult.
