Head of Year 7 – Ms S Manser

Welcome to Sutton High School. I’m delighted that you are thinking about joining us in Year 7! Below you can read how they felt in their first year here. Each account is different, because every girl here is different – that is what makes this school a special place to be. Our school is diverse, warm and welcoming and our girls are friendly and kind. They love their school and we encourage them to be fiercely independent.

If you decide to join us here, you will be known and respected for who you are, and your strengths and talents will be valued as an important part of our community. Moving on from your junior or prep school is an exciting time and at our school you can be sure that it will be a lot of fun! There are so many opportunities here, both inside the classroom and in our trips, clubs and activities.

As you move up to senior school you will develop your independence and your love of learning, and we will encourage you to be the best that you can be. You will always be supported by excellent teachers who care about your learning and want you to succeed here. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Hear from our girls…

Mia

Hi, my name is Mia and I will be writing about how much I have enjoyed Year 7 so far. When I first joined Sutton High, everyone was so welcoming. Their inclusivity, warmth and compassion made me so proud to have joined the school.

I would also like to share all the amazing trips we have been on since starting at Sutton. At the beginning of the year, we went on a trip to Thorpe Park where we took part in fun science tasks and even more exhilarating rides. We also went on a three‑day residential trip to PGL Osmington Bay, where we did lots of thrilling activities that helped us grow closer bonds with friends and show teamwork with people we may never have spoken to before.

Back at school, we have lessons that encourage critical thinking, problem‑solving and curiosity. One subject I would like to mention is Kaleidoscope. In this subject, we get the opportunity to try many new and important skills, such as British Sign Language – a key skill that helps us communicate with more people and be inclusive. We also get to try unique games, such as one called Go, which has a Japanese background, and so much more.

I hope this gives you a sense of what has made Year 7 at Sutton High so special to me so far!

Nikitha

Joining the Sutton High community in Year 7 was an exciting but nerve-wracking experience. At the start of the year, I was scared I wouldn’t make any friends and I missed my primary school friends so much. However, after just a few weeks, I met some brilliant people. You will definitely find lots of friends here too!
During the first few days I got lost a lot but after a few weeks you stop getting lost and you remember your timetable and where all your classes are. You also get used to the homework load which really isn’t a lot of work.
There is a huge variety of clubs to join. I have done STEM club, where you do cool science activities like making ice cream and lava lamps. I also joined Minecraft club to play Minecraft Education and have fun, dance club to learn and perform routines, and School of Rock, where you join a band with students from different year groups to perform rock songs. If you want, you can even lead your own club when you’re in Sixth Form!
Everyone here is incredibly kind and inclusive. You will meet a wonderful variety of people from different backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities.
Over the year, you will also go on exciting trips. In Year 7, you even get the chance to go to Thorpe Park! When it is lunch the cafeteria always offers a great selection of food, including sandwiches, hot meals, soup, and a salad bar and during break there is a tuck shop in there where you can buy snacks.
All of the teachers are very supportive and help you to achieve your goals. Plus, the school grounds are very pretty with lots of great places to hang out at break time.

Jaycee

My name is Jaycee and I had a blast at year 7! I made so much new friends and learned so much new things. My favourite trip has to be PGL! If you love a thrill in life, this is the place to be. My favourite class if definitely science or art. There are so many practicals and pieces to do! I hope you enjoy year 7 as much as I do! Our school will make sure you have nothing to worry about!

Dami

Hello, my name is Dami and I will be explaining what I have enjoyed so far in Year 7. First, I participated in a year 7 show called Cinderella. It was an amazing chance to show lots of parents my acting skills and build up my confidence. To make sure that no one would get upset if they didn’t get a role, the teachers ensured that everyone would be able to take part no matter what.
I have also been to Thorpe Park, which is a theme park with lots of different rides to choose from. However, before we could go on a ride, we had to complete three STEM activities which really helped us to think about tricky problems and to work as a team to solve them. This trip also helped me overcome my fear of extremely high rides. The teachers would never force you to go on a ride, but they would deeply encourage you because they know how proud we would be of ourselves if we did go on that ride.

Kaleidoscope is a very fun subject where you get to do a variety of activities teaching you about subjects that lots of other schools don’t do, but we think these skills that get taught in Kaleidoscope are very important. The first thing I did in kaleidoscope was food tech where they encouraged you to try new foods as well as cooking them. Even if you have allergies or if you are gluten free, they always have different solutions to make sure you still get to cook food that is safe for you to eat. I really enjoyed this because I got to try foods that I didn’t know existed or foods that I didn’t know I liked. We also do BSL, digital literacy and getting to walk are adorable school dog, Buddy.

Lastly, we have a wide range of clubs that we do at our school. We have lots of options to pick from when it comes to clubs. Our school does this to make sure that whatever activities you enjoy doing you get to do. If this isn’t the case, then there are school forms that we fill out which is where you can tell the school about club suggestions that you would like them to include. If your club suggestion is sensible, I’m positive that the school will add it to our vast list of clubs. We have sporty clubs to science clubs and even art clubs. I do Stem club on a Wednesday after school where we get to dive deeper into science and do very fun experiments. Also, our clubs are held before and after school so that more people can attend our clubs and enjoy themselves with their friends. Thank you for reading.

Eleanor

This year, in year 7, I have really enjoyed going on PGL, doing a variety of clubs, Kaleidoscope and sports matches and more! On PGL I had an amazing time, meeting and becoming closer with friends. I pushed myself to do bigger and better things, including activities I would have never done before. In Kaleidoscope I am walking Buddy the dog, and I also did food tech, online literacy and many more. I can’t wait because next I am going to do BSL (British Sign Language) which I am really looking forward to learning. I have taken part in a selection of extra-curricular clubs: STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) and cricket. In the winter term I also did football club and dance. I have taken part in sporting events, including football, football tournaments and a dance show that we performed to our parents. In our house teams I took part in house sing, this was so fun but also supported my team when they did house drama. I cannot wait for our day of sports coming up! In lessons I have extended and developed my skills in so many subjects. Some of these include doing a variety of different projects in D.T (design technology), art and P.E In D.T we made our own tote bags and keyrings. In art we created our own self – portraits and in P.E, I improved in cricket, dance and football over the year. I really love that I have been given all these opportunities at Sutton High and can’t wait for more to come!
