SHS Sustainability Update

This year has been incredibly busy – sustainability has spread like wildfire. With the recent stretch of extreme hot weather, it’s even more important to focus on sustainable practices.  Recently, all students in Year 9 reconnected with nature and participated in the 30 Hours Wild, a GDST initiative where students at Sutton gained the most ‘wild acts’.  Inspired by David Attenborough, who said, “No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced”, all students went outside and observed insects, collected colours to create a natural rainbow, laid down on the grass, watching clouds overhead and counted the butterflies in a small area. Next year we’re excited to host the GDST Symposium on Sustainability.

Wimbledon English Symposium

On 4th June, 10 Year 10 students participated in the English Symposium at Wimbledon High. A variety of sessions were held, including

  • “A word after a word after a word is power – Margaret Atwood”: why we teach Creative Writing
  • Shakespeare’s sisters: were there any Renaissance women critics and why it matters
  • Literary Theory and transcending the limits of A Level literary criticism
  • How cinema reimaged Shakespeare across the Globe
  • Sweet Science: Blake and Newton’s Sleep

Students engaged, debated, listened and were inspired by the sessions.  It was a great event, and a taster for the students of what A Level Literature is like.
