Preparing To Leave Home – Cookery School!
With their A Level exams rapidly approaching (and already having started in some cases), it has never been more important for Year 13 to have some fun activities to break up their revision! As part of our ‘Preparing to Leave Home’ series of Enrichment lessons Year 13 are taking part in a carousel of workshops over a four week period, led by their Form Tutors and Mrs Harvey. One session is spent discussing the practicalities of leaving home, including the incredibly important skills of how to read a washing label and how to budget so you can afford to eat at university as well as go on nights out! In another session students practise some key first aid skills, to keep themselves and their friends safe at university. Then finally, and by far the most popular, everyone attends two lunchtime cooking sessions with Mrs Harvey and Ms Broadhurst where they cook and eat their own lunch in the Food Tech room! A selection of student-budget-friendly, but still delicious, recipes are provided including: sun-dried tomato pasta; Carluccio’s mushroom risotto and; Peri Peri chicken with wild rice. Being in the kitchen is a steep learning curve for some of our Year 13s but they all get there in the end and produce some fabulous dishes, as the photographs show!
Instead of their usual Games lesson on Wednesday 22 April, Year 13 had another important ‘Preparing to Leave Home’ Enrichment lesson – a self-defence session led by Eira Culverwell. Eira is GDST alumnae from Howell’s who competes internationally in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and runs self-defence workshops for students within the GDST and in schools across the country. Eira’s approach is to teach students how to minimise risk (only ever have one headphone in and always be aware of your surroundings) while preparing them to react if the worst does happen. Her sessions are practical, fun and definitely took Year 13 out of their comfort zone, as they were practising both attack and defence moves on each other. We hope our students never have to use these skills in their life beyond Sutton High, but it is important that they can if needed.
