This year’s production of High School Musical, in collaboration with Sutton Grammar School, was a thoroughly fabulous show. From eagerly awaiting the announcement of what this year’s musical would be, to the moment’s backstage, the cast and crew have had an unforgettable experience – performing three incredible shows on the 19th, 20th and 21st of March after months of rehearsals.
The story follows the blossoming relationship between Troy, a high school jock, and Gabriella, the new smart girl at school. After discovering a shared love of singing during a chance karaoke duet on holiday, they unexpectedly reunite at school. Their relationship and their surprise decision to audition together for the school musical disrupts the status quo, much to the dismay of Sharpay – the reigning drama queen – Sharpay, her twin brother and right-hand man, Ryan, and even Troy and Gabriella’s well-meaning friends. Ultimately, Gabriella and Troy find a way to be unapologetically themselves and are cast as the lead roles in the school show, inspiring their peers to break free from expectations.
Although the plot may at first appear to be a classic high-school romance, its message runs deeper. From Zeke’s passion for crème brûlée to Martha’s love of dance, the story celebrates individuality and the courage to step beyond the status quo. At its heart, High School Musical champions inclusivity, acceptance and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself – values which lie at the core of Sutton High School’s ethos.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without our dedicated teachers. Miss Toner has been a constant source of support, guidance, and belief, encouraging us to embrace the cringe and commit wholeheartedly. Mr Hargraves pushed us to not only to be confident in ourselves and our performance, but to be proud of ourselves and have fun. Miss Levitt worked tirelessly to shape a production where everyone belongs and is valued. And Miss J-V brought boundless energy to rehearsals, lifting spirits with her contagious enthusiasm. We’ve made friends, memories and gained confidence thanks to the environment they created.
Our incredible tech team also deserves huge recognition. They demonstrated courage, truth and joy in their organisation, problem solving skills and ability to make sure we feel calm on and off stage. They truly were the backbone of this production.
We’ve had such a fantastic six months, growing not only as performers but as a community. This show reminded us of what can happen when people from different year groups, interests and backgrounds come together with a shared purpose. As the final notes faded and the curtain fell, one thing was clear: we really were all in this together.
