A Month in Sutton High Prep School

Reception

The girls in Reception have settled so well and we are really proud of their independence and resilience. Over the holidays, the girls collected five things in a ‘Five Fabulous Finds’ bag which they then bravely presented to the class. We saw some truly fabulous treasures; special shells, holiday mementos, maps, photos and drawings.

Days in Reception are very busy, last week they enjoyed visiting Forest School where they explored the great outdoors. Minibeast hunting was really popular, as was the mud kitchen and den building.

We have started our phonics sounds and the girls are all enjoying sharing books and starting to read. We were lucky enough to welcome Peggy into our class and she loved listening to the stories with the girls.

Reception enjoy lessons taught by our specialist teachers, such as Music, Sport and French. They have singing with Mrs Dean and liked moving to the rhythm of the music using scarves. All the girls have been keen to swim on Tuesdays and are developing their water confidence. French lessons always sound active and lively. This week, the girls have been learning different greetings in French, ‘bonjour’, ‘salut’ and ‘ca va’

Year 1-

We have had a very busy couple of weeks in Year 1.  We have started our ‘Castle Quest’ topic and used the VR headsets to explore the features of lots of different castles from around the world.  We then worked in groups to build castles using different constructions toys.  We tried to show the different features we have learnt about.  We are off to Windsor Castle to see a real castle!  We are hoping we might see the King while we are there.

In Science we are learning about our bodies and how we use our senses to learn about the world around us.  We have participated in investigations to discover whether the oldest girls have the largest feet and how we use our eyes for vision.  We tried throwing beans bags in buckets and covering up one or both eyes and compared the results.  We did better when we could use both eyes to see our targets! We will be exploring our sense of hearing next.

Year 2-

This week, Year 2 had the exciting opportunity to step into the world of democracy by casting their very own votes at our ballot box. Learning about democracy from an early age is an important part of helping our girls grow into confident, thoughtful, and independent young women.

The girls took the experience incredibly seriously, carefully considering their choices before placing their votes. It was wonderful to see how empowered they felt, understanding that their voices and opinions truly matter.

Moments like these show that even our youngest pupils can grasp the importance of fairness, responsibility, and the strength that comes from having a say important values at Sutton High.

Year 3-

Y3 have been learning all about skeletons. They have learnt that the largest bone in the human body is the femur and know that the functions of bones include support, movement and protection. For homework, they made their own skeletons made from household items and what a wonderful job they did! Well done 3P!

Year 5-

Year 5 have been learning about forces in science, focusing on air resistance and streamlining. As part of the unit, they explored how different shapes affect movement through the air by designing and testing their own paper aeroplanes. The children had great fun experimenting with a range of designs and observing how air resistance impacted their flight. In 5S, the winner was Aadhya, whose brilliant design flew the entire length of the hall — an impressive demonstration of aerodynamic thinking!

Year 6-

Year 6 Shine in GDST Oxford Mathematics Conference Applications

This term, around half of our Year 6 pupils applied for the GDST Oxford Mathematics Conference; an incredible show of enthusiasm and talent. The standard of every application was outstanding, making the final selection a real challenge.

We want to applaud every girl who applied for showing courage and using their Bravery Superpower when applying for this exciting opportunity.

A special congratulations goes to Emma, Leia, Lydia, Olivia, Shanaiya and Yutong, who will proudly represent Sutton High School at the conference. We know they will do us proud and can’t wait to hear all about their mathematical adventures in Oxford
