A Tech Odyssey: Sutton High School takes on Silicon Valley

Over the February half-term break, twenty-one Sutton High School students embarked on a Computer Science-focused trip to San Francisco, California, alongside their Computer Science teachers Ms Buttigieg and Ms Baboolall, and fellow students from sister schools Notting Hill & Ealing and Sydenham.

The students journeyed to Silicon Valley to tour the grounds of tech giants Google, eBay, and Apple and engaged in interactive experiences at the Intel Museum, Computer History Museum, and Tech Interactive Museum. They harnessed the opportunity to delve into the evolution of technology and investigate first-hand both failed and successful historical digital innovations, as well as learn of new technology innovations on the horizon. Amidst their travels, the students experienced the privilege of exploring the grounds of Stanford University and visiting iconic landmarks such as Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, and the San Francisco Cable Car Museum. They indulged in renowned American cuisine and also gained insight into the craftsmanship behind handmade fortune cookies in Chinatown. A highlight of their adventure was a memorable cable car ride up the steep San Francisco hills, to reach the eight sharp hairpin turns of Lombard Street (renowned as the crookedest street in the world), and also witness commercial driverless taxis navigating the local roads! Reflecting on the experiences of their trip, the students will carry with them not only memories of iconic landmarks and technological marvels but also a deeper understanding of the ever-evolving landscape of innovation.
