Careers Week 2024 at Sutton High

National Careers Week at Sutton High School has been a busy one.

Year 7 have been interviewing staff in a range of roles including our ICT Network Operations Manager, Welfare Officer, and Theatre Technician.

Year 8 explored workplaces (and the reality of working from home) for Take Our Daughter to Work Day and will share their findings with peers or took part in a Step into the NHS activity and created a job advert.

Year 9 participated in Learn to Earn where they participated in hands-on activities supported by volunteers from the world of work and they learnt (in their words),

You are never fixed to one profession.

How to budget yourself to save more money.

Apprenticeships are good.

In Form Time, students have been able to participate in activities and hear from SHS alumnae about their varied pathways.

Students in Year 7 and 8 during their NCW Assembly, were encouraged to consider career as a journey through life, learning and work and the importance of transferable skills; particularly as 65% of students will be employed in jobs that do not exist yet. They also know where to find Mrs Lenaghan, if they have any questions at all about their next steps, during their journey through SHS!

Ruth MacLaren, who left SHS to go onto a BBC Broadcast Engineer Apprenticeship, is visiting Year 10 and 11 on Friday to talk about her Apprenticeship journey and to inform students further about this pathway.

Ella from the London Interdisciplinary School delivered a NCW Assembly to Year 11 -13 students about their BASc degree course which aims to equip students with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to solve complex real-world problems.

On Thursday lunchtime, Tahira from Arup talked to students about her journey from taking a chemical engineering degree to her current role in fire safety engineering and shared information about their Fire Safety Degree Apprenticeship.

Veronika and Ruben from Mazars talked to students about Mazars and the Accountancy Apprenticeships they offer.

The NCW flipbook shared with students and parents/carers has lots of information about upcoming events and a reminder of the careers/labour market information resources available to students.  Further information, events and opportunities will be posted on the Careers at SHS Team.
