Year 8 German have been busy creating their own comic book strips for the Oxford German Olympiad Competition. We celebrated their hard work this week through a Kaffee und Kuchen afternoon where a number of students presented their work. The attention to detail and their German was impeccable! We can’t wait to hear the official results from Oxford next month.
In March, we first started doing are comic books for the German Oxford Olympiad, the theme was 1 to 2 animals going on an adventure. And 100 to 200 words in the span of three pages. With most people doing German influenced comics reflecting Germanys culture.
Melia: My comic consisted of 2 squirrels going on an adventure, applying for Germanys got talent. However, they were declined and planned to destroy 3 festivals. “Blumenfest” – the flower festival, “Oktoberfest”- beer festival and finally “Weinschnastmaarkt”- Christmas market. In the end they remembered that they forgot to harvest for the winter. Ruby: my comic was inspired by Franz Kafka’s (a German-language writer) novel “The Metamorphosis”. Where Gregor Samsa wakes up as a beetle trying to turn back into a human. Going on journey with his cat Grete Samsa. In the end Grete leaves Gregor to fend for himself realizing that she has no use being Gregors friend. he realizes he may never be human but that’s ok because he still feels everything a human would feel. Driving of in his Volkswagen Beetle
What we enjoyed
What I (Ruby L) enjoyed was drawing out the comic and all the different panels. I especially enjoyed drawing out my characters expressions trying to make them as dramatic as possible. What I (Melia T) enjoyed was the finalising of the plan and drawing the characters and bringing them to life with colour. This also made it bold and stand out, I particularly enjoyed drawing the different festivals and it helped me get a better understanding of what each festival was.
What we found challenging
What I (Ruby L) found the most challenging was the basic plan for the comic. Coming up with the story line and a satisfying ending that would makes sure there wasn’t loose ends to my story. What I (Melia T) found the most challenging was creating the characters and plotting them into my story. It helped once I found my inspiration and story line to put them together and make sure it all made sense.
What we learned
What I (Melia T) learned was the amazing activities held across Germany, and the great knowledge I received in fulfilling this. I then was surprised by the well-known event of Germany’s got talent- known as Das Supertalent. I thoroughly enjoyed this activity. What I (Ruby L) learned most of all is more German. Such as how to arrange my sentences, getting more used to the tricky grammar. Also expanding my German vocabulary.
